This summer, vacation travel is back. And, in the virtual work world, no vacation goes unpunished…
A 2020 Harris Poll survey found that 87 percent of employees dread returning to work after taking time off. Top “return to work stressors” included getting back into a routine, getting caught up on busy work, and the dreaded “catching up on email.”
What this data should be telling you is that you need to get ready for some “return to work” stress among your employees. In June, the AAA automobile owners group reported that 48 million Americans were expected to travel over the 4th of July holiday.
The way to overcome this stress is to tell employees to take time off. In a year when burnouthas led to nearly 40% of workers to consider leaving their jobs, time off is critical.
The correct answer, of course, is leadership. Leaders who look to make life at work more joyful for their employees create loyalty and increase their workforce’s productivity.

This article by Dr. Jonathan Fader, Ph.D. offers up 3 Super Simple Ways to Enjoy Your Life More, and it includes two things you can implement at work to help employees extract more joy from life.
Tip #1 Have a daily (or weekly) ritual around enjoyment – If a daily ritual is too much to manage for your workforce, consider implementing a weekly or bi-weekly “enjoyment ritual” that gives your team(s) the opportunity to celebrate wins, be thankful for one-another, or highlight the value of their work.
Tip #3. Put a reminder on your phone, computer or calendar that reminds you to enjoy whatever is most important in your life – This tip ties in perfectly with tip #1. If you implement a regular ritual around enjoyment, take the bold step of blocking time on your team’s calendars to make sure they don’t double-book and miss out on this critical activity.
